You can just about get anything for your dog now, from jumpers to ballet tutus, and while they do look really cute, are they necessary? The ballet tutus, definitely not (unless you have enrolled your pup into a ballet class, in which case, yes and get them some ballet shoes too), but when it comes to coats and jackets, are they just silly and for over-indulged pets? Or does your dog need one? Would you catch the dogs in the wild wearing coats? No. But then again, you wouldn't catch them wearing collars, drinking from bowls, and giving paw to get a treat either.

So, in answer to the question, in most cases, dogs have enough fur to keep them warm outside during the colder weather. However, shorter-haired breeds, small dogs, senior dogs, puppies, and dogs with medical conditions do benefit from the additional warmth.

The little doggies are the most likely to need extra insulation as they find it harder to retain body heat, so if you are outside for longer periods of time in the winter, then they would likely benefit from a little coat. If your dog is a short-haired breed such as the Chinese Crested, Chihuahua, and Italian Greyhound or a breed that is originally from a warm climate, they may also appreciate an extra layer. If they're only going to be outside for ten minutes, though, then they should be fine.

If you do choose to buy your dog a jacket, then it's important to remember that they should only be worn outside as if they wear them in the house as they can easily overheat. Make sure you take their jacket off when they get inside to prevent chafing and irritation of the skin too. Also, some dogs are uncomfortable wearing clothes, so don't force them to.

Wool and fleece are the most common materials for dog jackets, but you might be better with water-resistant fabrics if it's snowy. Whatever fabric you choose, make sure it is easy to care for. A jacket should fit snugly and completely cover your dog's stomach (except with a male dog) and end at the base of the tail, keeping their legs free so they can walk, run, and go to the toilet.

Make sure you try the jacket on your dog to make sure it fits them comfortably and is easy to get on and off. If you worry about your pooch getting cold, then don't feel embarrassed buying your dog a jacket. Yes, they look cute, but they can also look really smart and can help your dog to enjoy themselves more in the winter months.
